Cameron McCloud and his Dallas-based hip-hop collective, Cure for Paranoia, have finally earned a spot behind NPR’s most famous desk after four years of submissions to the Tiny Desk Concert Contest.
Each winter, the group uploaded a performance that showcased their signature blend of DIY instrumental mastery and McCloud’s sharp, socially conscious lyricism. It’s a formula well-suited to NPR’s Tiny Desk format. While many of the contest’s thousands of entrants are left wondering whether their message resonated with judges, Cure for Paranoia received signs of encouragement along the way. The group was named a finalist in all four years they submitted and even joined NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts On The Road tour in Houston. Still, beating out more than 6,000 entries in 2026 was no small feat.
At the beginning of 2025, McCloud announced he would post a new rap to Instagram every day of the year, and those lyrics eventually came together to form the song “No Brainer.” It was the group’s performance of the track in front of downtown Dallas’s iconic Eye sculpture that ultimately secured their victory. Fans online widely agree the win was both hard-fought and well deserved.
Based on the group’s Instagram stories, their Tiny Desk set appears to have been recorded at NPR’s Washington, D.C., offices this past Wednesday. On Thursday, McCloud shared a glimpse of a printed setlist, revealing that at least three songs from their past submissions will be included. In another post, he wrote, “naw cus why the staff say our Tiny Desk was Doechii level…”
Needless to say, anticipation is high for the video’s release. With momentum firmly on their side, Cure for Paranoia is poised for a major breakout moment. The group is set to join NPR’s On The Road tour this summer and will perform at Austin City Limits in October.
